How to keep your heart healthy as you age

Heart disease is a serious condition that occurs when the heart becomes damaged by an infection or other condition. Heart attacks and strokes can cause sudden death and permanent disability or damage to the brain. Heart diseases are the most common cause of death in seniors. These include heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and arteriosclerosis. The risk of a heart attack increases with age and can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle, including exercise and a balanced diet.

Symptoms –

Many people with heart disease have no symptoms. Others may have shortness of breath or dizziness caused by a narrowing of the arteries to the heart. Symptoms can also include chest pain that lasts more than 20 minutes, especially when you stand up suddenly from sitting or lying down; sudden shortness of breath; feeling like something is very heavy in your chest; pain that radiates to your neck or jaw; nausea; sweating; rapid heartbeat; cold sweat on your forehead; numbness or tingling in the arms or legs; severe pain behind one eye or at the front of the head.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked by plaque buildup in arteries. This causes damage to the heart muscle and lowers blood flow to vital organs such as the brain and kidneys. A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked by a clot called a cerebral embolism (a blood clot). A stroke may lead to permanent disability or death if it isn’t treated immediately with emergency treatment.

If you have a family history of heart disease, you should be screened regularly for signs of heart disease — even if you’re not experiencing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.

Tips for Preventing Heart Disease-

The following tips for preventing heart disease can help you live a longer, healthier life:

Get regular exercise & watch your weight: Exercise is one of the most important ways to prevent heart disease — especially if you’re overweight or obese. It will help you control your weight and improve your health in many other ways as well. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated keeps one healthy.

Eat healthy foods: Eating healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products can help keep your body healthy and your heart strong by reducing your risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, and other diseases related to poor diet or lack of physical activity. To make sure you’re getting enough fiber in your diet, try eating whole grains instead of refined grains like white bread or pasta that don’t offer much nutritional value on their own.

Stop smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products (such as chewing tobacco) and control excess alcohol: Tobacco use increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, and lung cancer — all conditions that can lead to heart disease.

Excess alcohol consumption can worsen health conditions and contribute to heart diseases like blood pressure, arrhythmias and high cholestrol levels.

Sleep Schedule: According to the American Heart Association, studies have found that people need 6 to 8 hours of sleep each day and that too little or too much can increase risk of cardiovascular problems. Irregular sleep patterns in older adults lead to higher rates of heart attacks and strokes than a more regular nightly schedule does.During normal sleep ones blood pressure goes down. Having sleep problems means blood pressure stays higher for longer period of time and high blood pressure is one of the leading cause for heart disease. Thus prioritizing on good sleep habits will lead to healthy heart.

Regular Checkups:
Heart disease can often go unnoticed and we might take it lightly considering it as a mere chest pain sometimes. But this carelessness can often turn deadly if goes unnoticed. Thus, it is crucial to get your regular yearly health check-ups  done and get your heart checked by a professional incase of a slightest hint of any uneasiness indicating a heart issue.
